Out With The Old…

Apart of what I do, being a Wardrobe Consultant, is closet audit’s. I go in my client’s closet and we decide what goes and what stays. What’s way out of style, what’s classic and what’s just straight up a big no-no! So in honor of a New Year coming in a matter of days, I decided to do a virtual closet audit for all my faithful FM Readers. If you have any of the following, it must go!

The legging:

I think the legging pretty much served it’s purpose. It came, it was convenient, it went with almost everything, and it was a cheaper alternative for my sister’s living on a tight budget, that still wanted to be trendy, and it came in all kinds of style, finishes and prices. It was good while it lasted, but don’t let the 09 catch these in your closet. Like most things fashion, it came, served it’s purpose and goes. Fashion is a revolving door, don’t try to hold on to things that are meant to go. Let the legging go!

Hippie Headbands:

Next to leggings, hippie headbands was the biggest trend to hit Hollywood in the 08. Everyone from Mischa Barton, to Vanessa Hudgens, to Ashlee Simpson, to Lindsay Lohan had in. But what goes up, must come down, including the ever popular headbands.

Pegged Jeans:

Perhaps the most ugliest trend ever! Katie Holmes in particular has used and abused this trend in the 08, having Reese Witherspoon, Victoria Beckham and Heidi Klum following suit. This is something that would definitely have to find it’s way out of your closet and into the Goodwill bin.

But for everything that must go, there are things that must say. So, below I have composed a list of trends that should stay in your closet for a wee bit longer…..

Floral Print:

This playful spring print has been around for decades and shouldn’t even be considered a trend, but a classic. It comes in big florals, small florals, on skirts, dresses, blouses, everything! It came back in full effect when the maxi dress trend became huge in 2008 when Spring hit and designers like Stella McCartney, Javovich, Diane von Furstenberg & Milly all produced the casual must have in their runway collections. Keep this around for a very long time, make this a staple. Trend? Not likely.

Over-sized Sunglasses:

What would a summer day be without it? This is also something that accidentally got named a “trend” when it is indeed a classic and wardrobe staple. I had a pair of oversized glasses that I got from Forever 21 and then ended up giving them to my Aunt, because it just didn’t look right on me. Chloe makes the best oversized shades. Hold onto this for…. ever!

Maxi Dresses:

This trend first hit the radar about a year ago. In 07. It’s so versatile, it can be worn on red carpets or just a casual day out shopping, and it can be worn no matter what your size. Pregnant, stick skinny, curvy or plus sized. It just works. Another wardrobe must have, and it’s also worth the splurge.

Some things are just more so staples and classics than trends, but for these considered-to-be trends hold on a little bit longer.
