Black Is Back!
So after the recent “black-out” at New York Fashion Week in Fall 2007, the urge to give black models more jobs has become more of an outrage than an issue. So while everybody twiddled their thumbs wondering “Should we give these black models the job?” worrying about how poor they would do in sales, Vogue Italia did something about it! Their much anticipated July issue, which hits news stands in Europe next Thursday and will have a follow up in the U.S., features models Liya Kebede (who got the front cover), Naomi Campbell of course, teen sensation Jourdan Dunn, Veronica Webb, BET’s Toccara, Sessilee Lopez and run way retiree Tyra Banks.
For pics from the issue read below the cut…..
I know all you fashion journalists and editor’s are pissy right now like “Why didn’t we think of this?!” These pics are FAB-U-LOUS (or as Tyra put’s it- Fierce) and we’ll see how good this magazine do in sales, I expect it to do VERY good. Take that for “Black models don’t sell covers, clothes or products” SMH, as if we don’t exist and spend over $20 billion on clothing a year. Every time you exclude a black model, you are losing a percentage of that $20 billion, your prejudice and so are we! We want to see familiar faces on these magazine covers, in these ad’s, on those runways. We want people we can relate to. Not all of us are pale white, 6’0 in our flat feet and 98 pounds. It is humanly impossible for us to all be that “perfect”.
Black is beautiful.
Say it, Love it, Mean it, Live it, Embrace it, and Tell it like it is
